MAKE A DATE TO JOIN THE RACE FOR LIFE IN CHESHIRE
30 PER CENT OFF THE JOINING FEE IN JANUARY
PEOPLE in Cheshire are being encouraged to get January off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.
As an added incentive, there’s 30% off entry fees* during January with the code RFL30.
This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Tatton Park, Stockport, Warrington, Chester and Cholmondeley Castle
Laura Cass, Cancer Research UK’s Cheshire Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Cheshire access to the latest treatments.
“You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.”
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research.
She continued: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Cheshire with people across the North West and the whole of the UK.
“Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now.
She added: “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.
“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend.
“To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.”
Laura continued: “This January, we’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”
Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

MANCHESTER RUM FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR A THIRD YEAR
‘The perfect Christmas present for rum lovers’ Rum advocate and Manchester based Dave Marsland of Drinks Enthusiast is bringing back Manchester Rum Festival for a 3rd year running, hosting it at the new event and exhibition space Brickworks, within Barton Arcade on Deansgate.
Saturday 8th June 2019 will see an expansion of the previous two sold-out festivals, resulting in both an afternoon and evening session for the first time, with ticket prices frozen from the 2018 festival, staying at £20 per person. "SEMINAR ROOM ADDED TO 2019" The festival, created by Dave in 2017 to show that Manchester and the North of England are contributing in a major way to the growing rum category, will feature for the first time a seminar room that will house some of the world’s best rum speakers, brand owners and cocktail bartenders.
It will also see the return of Revolución de Cuba as the festivals bar supporter, offering a variety of rum cocktails through their Cuban bar experience. The in-house festival shop will also be present once again, this time hosted by Marigot Bay Bar and Café, the latest venture opened by Dave in July 2018 in Altrincham. Alston Bar and Beef are also returning as one of the festival’s food vendors. “REVOLUCION DE CUBA RETURN” Exhibitors will be announced over the coming months through the festival website and social media pages, as well as further activities around the city. 365 Ball in aid of The Christie Hospital
The Altrincham Duck is looking forward to supporting Leukaemia survivor Matt Dyson who has organised this spectacular event
On the 9 November 2017 Matt Dyson, of Altrincham, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). Thanks to the dedication, skill and care of The Christie Hospital Matt is now, remarkably, in remission. Matt wants to give something back to those who helped him and his family through this traumatic time and has organised the 365 Ball at The Lowry Hotel to be held on 9 November 2018. This will mark the anniversary of his diagnosis.
Family man Matt received his shock diagnosis after experiencing just two weeks of headaches and developing an abscess. Within just one hour of being told he had AML he was transferred to The Christie Hospital where further testing and treatment began. He commenced a five week round of chemotherapy which heartbreakingly prevented him from having any contact with his daughters then aged 3 and 1. Further treatments ensued and within six months Matt was told that he was in remission.
Matt chose to participate in clinical trials during his treatment at The Christie which he believes helped him conquer his illness. This is the reason Matt has chosen to support the haematology research fund at The Christie in the hope that others will benefit from The Christie’s world leading research. But, it wasn’t just the drugs, brains and facilities that helped Matt survive this incredible tough journey, it was the staff themselves who gave him and his family hop,. “At a time when I thought my world had crumbled around me every single member of staff gave me and my loved ones support. They were all so positive that I could beat AML and they helped us all believe that this were possible. And, thankfully they were right. I want to thank them all for their incredible hard work and dedication. This Ball is part of a series of fundraising events I am organising, but it is certainly the most glamorous!”.
Key Radio’s Darren Proctor will host the 365 Ball, a night which promises to bring laughter and celebration of Matt’s remission as well as his determination to ‘pay back’. Guests will be welcomed on the red carpet and enjoy welcome drinks whilst being serenaded by acoustic music. A three course meal will be followed by live entertainment. There will be plenty of fundraising opportunities with a raffle and auction.
The generosity of all of those who have donated prizes has blown Matt away. Thousands of pounds worth of goods from Belstaff, Osprey London, Loake, Jeffery-West, House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols and Sunglasses Hut have been gifted to help raise money on the night. Matt is also grateful to local donations from the Hale Country Club and Spa and Bunny & Banana Crafts. Perhaps one of the most unique, ‘money can’t buy’ prizes will be an opportunity to name a character in Jo Sefton’s, author of If They Knew, second novel.
We are told there will be more surprises on the night and we can’t wait.
