Hearing Dogs is a national Charity and centre of excellence in training dogs to alert their deaf recipients to everyday sounds and danger signals in the home and workplace, such as door bells, cooker timers, alarm clocks and smoke alarms.
Our head office is in Buckinghamshire and we have a second, smaller training centre in Yorkshire. We have 6 other static satellite areas elsewhere in the country which hold groups of volunteers caring for and training our puppies, supported by a local member of staff. In 2015 we are launching our 7th puppy socialising satellite area in Cheshire.

Puppy socialising volunteers take a young dog when it is around 8 weeks of age and care for it for around 14 months. During that time, the volunteer teaches the pup basic obedience and housetraining, and introduces it to various sights, sounds and smells, preparing it for its later life as a working hearing dog. The puppy will have to socialise with animals, children and adults, experience travelling on various modes of transport such as cars, trains and buses, and learn perfect behaviour whilst visiting shops, restaurants and other public places.

| Once the puppy reaches adolescence, it will return to one of our training centres to learn its advanced ‘sound work’ before being placed with a deaf person. |
All volunteers are provided with all the food, toys, bedding and equipment needed for the role, and fortnightly puppy classes will take place in a local hall. The only thing we look for in a volunteer is adequate time to socialise and train the puppy, so generally, full time workers aren’t suitable.
