Riddles.

Riddles Bar is a speakeasy bar in the heart of Altrincham, offering world-class cocktails expertly prepared. Echoing the world of 1920s prohibition.

Located on 28 Greenwood Street, you can access the bar through their main door, or also through a little side door, hidden away near the entrance to the offices on number 28-32 Greenwood Street; right next to the door to Mort Subite.

We’ve been to Riddles a fair few times, the fact that their cocktail menu is seasonal is a great incentive to keep trying new things! They develop the menus in house and also if by any chance you don’t see a drink you like, a chat with one of the bartenders will ensure that they might make something off the menu just for you! Please bear in mind that on busy nights, to get your cocktail made and delivered to your table, you might have to wait a little bit; but as they say, good things come to those who wait!!

You can make a reservation to ensure a table is booked for you on the night you’re choosing, which makes things a lot easier if you’re planning a birthday party or something along those lines!! And you can also hire them to have cocktails served at your event, at home, in your own garden, wherever you like with their own mobile bar service, which will make your celebration unforgettable.

For the last year or so Riddles have been organizing tasting events, whiskey tasting, gin tasting and rum tasting; we went to the gin tasting last time, and having had such a great time, we decided to book for the next one; rum tasting!

El Dorado Rum Tasting Evening.

We sampled a range of rums from the Cask Aged El Dorado range, aged from 8yr to 25yr old.

The first taste was the El Dorado 8 Year old cask aged rum; a fusion of a full flavoured, heavy bodied rum with light-to-medium bodied rums aged in bourbon oak casks.

The second taste El Dorado 12 Year Old; a blend of specially selected aged rums, the youngest being no less than 12 years old! Round, mellow, full bodied palate with rich flavours of fruit and spice; this was my rum for the night, the taste was amazing! Definitely my favourite!

The third taste was El Dorado 15 Year Old Special Reserve; a combination of specially selected aged rums, some as old as 25 years, from the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still and the Versailles single wooden pot still.

Fourth taste was the El Dorado 21 Year Old Special Reserve; this is a rum with a special recipe blend with specially selected rums, oak aged for at least 21 years, from the Enmore wooden Coffey still, the Versailles single wooden pot still and the Albion Savalle still.

The fifth taste was the El Dorado 25 Year Old Vintage Reserve; an extremely rare creature and a rare experience to savour! This rum is rich, smooth and mellow with soft syrupy mouth-feel; possesses a silky smoothness which challenges the oldest cognac. Retailing at £400 per bottle, we were lucky to taste this, so thanks Del, owner of Riddles, for granting us the privilege!!

The last taste, which nobody was expecting was the El Dorado Rare Collection - Port Mourant; this rum is an extremely limited release taken from El Dorado’s Rare Collection Range. With distinctive aromas of chocolate, toffee, smoke, aged tobacco, coffee, molasses, mild anise and vanilla.

Guests also enjoyed two handcrafted rum cocktails on the night; the first one was called a Rumbugger; a cocktail made with a 3 year old El Dorado Rum, lime and chilli. It was a fab tasty starter. The second one was a take on Christmas, sorry we didn’t quite catch the name of this one, with a little Christmas pudding ball sitting on top of it!! Amazing!

To be perfectly honest it was a super fun evening of education and experimentation, a perfect night if you ask us!!

Our verdict is this, if you have the chance to go to a tasting night at Riddles, please do so!! Buy your tickets and enjoy a fantastic night!!
